Funding Sources
Each year, Detroit Horse Power runs free summer horse camps for 100 Detroit students from late June through the end of August at partner barns outside the city. These programs introduce participants to riding, horse care, equine professions, and the life lessons we learn from these amazing animals: Perseverance, Empathy, Responsible Risk-Taking, Confidence, and Self-Control (PERCS). DHP also provides paid employment for the advancing students in our after-school program to become counselors-in-training and shape the experience of new participants.
We are committed to the continued expansion of our program offerings because we know the need for this equine-assisted social-emotional development is greater than ever. Did you know that it costs DHP $500 per student to offer our one week of summer horse camp? That’s $7,500 per week of camp.
Detroit Horse Power is funded entirely by generous individual donors, foundation grants, and corporate sponsors, allowing us to provide these high-impact opportunities completely FREE for Detroit students.
